SWANA Announces Policy Initiative
Silver Spring, Md. -- The International Board of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), composed of 45 chapters throughout North America, has announced an initiative that urges policy granting financial incentives for investments in recycling, composting and the use of recovered materials. This initiative suggests incentives could come in the form of tax credits for recycled materials use, tax free bonds for recycling and composting investments, modification of virgin materials subsidies and other financial measures for recycled materials.
The board says these incentives would enable local governments to keep and expand the recycling and composting programs they offer and establish programs with greater breadth and sustainability. SWANA Executive Directory John Skinner said, "There is an urgent need for natural action to support local government efforts that are starting to maintain and expand their solid waste recovery efforts."
