Seattle – Green trash bins have lined many Puget-Sound area streets after a heavy snowstorm visited the city last week, hindering garbage collection for approximately 45,000 residents. However, the Houston-based Waste Management Inc. (WMI), which handles garbage collection under municipal contract, expects to have all refuse picked up by Jan. 20. WMI reported that snow and ice conditions were too hazardous to maintain regular collection routes.
"We really don’t want these big heavy trucks sliding around on hills, or our drivers getting out and getting hurt," Jerry Hardebeck, municipal contract manager for WMI told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "We err on the side of caution and ask our customers to understand."
