Oregon’s Rigid Plastic Container Recycling Rate Drops

Portland, Ore. – The recycling rate for rigid plastic containers dropped in 2002 to 26.2 percent from approximately 31 percent in 2001, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) reports, which barely meets the state requirement of 25 percent annual recovery. This rate reflects a production increase of nondeposit, nonreturnable water bottles and a decrease in the overall recycling rate for returnable plastic bottles covered under the Oregon Bottle Bill, the DEQ adds.

If the recovery rate were to drop below 25 percent, manufacturers may be required to use materials that would allow rigid plastic containers to be more easily recycled.
