House Passes Canada-U.S. Trash Agreement

Washington, D.C. -- The House of Representatives has passed an amendment that would earmark $1 million to enforce a bilateral agreement stating Canada must alert the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 30 days prior to shipping waste to the United States, according to news sources. The pact grants the EPA an opportunity to reject the waste. The amendment, which has been a leading cause among Michigan politicians lobbying to stop trash shipments from Toronto, will move to the Senate. Although the agreement was part of a 1992 treaty, the EPA has not been enforcing it.
