Report shows haulers are using natural-gas trucks

A report by the New York-based environmental organization INFORM has found that 1,500 out of 136,000 garbage trucks in use today are powered by natural gas, according to Reuters. The three-year study, titled “Greening Garbage Trucks: Trends in Alternative Fuels Use, 2002-2005,” also found that California has the most trucks that are powered by natural gas with 1,268. New York, Texas, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C., also use natural-gas trucks. In a statement, INFORM president Joanna Underwood said: “Replacing diesel fuel-powered trucks with trucks powered by natural gas is a tremendous opportunity not only for cleaner air and quieter neighborhoods, but also for reducing reliance on a fuel coming from risky and unreliable foreign sources.”
