Michigan county, Waste Management come to agreement on reducing Canadian garbage
According to an article in the Macomb Daily newspaper, Macomb County, Mich., officials have agreed to gradually restrict the disposal of Canadian trash into the Pine Tree Acres landfill in Lenox Township. The deal with Waste Management, which operates the landfill, would limit 25 percent of the landfill to Canadian garbage, in exchange for the county agreeing to a landfill expansion. The deal also calls for the landfill to ensure space for Macomb County’s garbage for at least 25 years. Two-thirds of the communities must approve the proposal in the coming weeks before it can become effective, according to the paper. Currently, approximately 80 percent of the garbage dumped at the landfill comes from Canada.
