Louisiana DEQ ponders proposed C&D landfill

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is considering a proposed construction and debris landfill near the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge, located east of New Orleans. According to the Times-Picayune, the 88-acre Chef landfill would have debris piles reaching 110 feet high, 30 of which would be underground in borrow pits. Although Waste Management, who would own the landfill, appears to have state, city and federal support, proponents believe that constructing the landfill near the wildlife refuge would affect the facility and the surrounding wetlands. The DEQ has not reached a decision on the proposed landfill, the paper says.
