Hawaii landfill faces $2.8 million fine for landfill violations

The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) has fined the city of Oahu $2.8 million for violations at the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary landfill, the city’s only municipal landfill. According to the Honolulu Advertiser, the city and the landfill operator, Waste Management Hawaii, were cited for 18 violations over a two-year period. The violations include improper solid waste cover, exceeding height limits and excessive leachate. The city and Waste Management also are required to submit a plan to the DOH addressing how the violations will be resolved. Waste Management will pay the fine, which is one of the largest environmental fines in the state, the paper says.
