New York — New York-based Ernst & Young has awarded Wayne Huizenga, chairman of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.-based Huizenga Holdings Inc. and a major figure in the history of the solid waste industry, its 2004 Overall National Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

In a varied career that includes the creation of Blockbuster Video and the ownership of several major professional sports franchises, Huizenga also has helped shape the private solid waste industry. In 1971, his Southern Sanitation Services merged with a Chicago-based garbage firm to create Waste Management (WMI). He retired from WMI in 1983. He also has served as chairman of Ft. Lauderdale-based Republic Services.
