Chicago City Council Renews Landfill Moratorium
Chicago — The Chicago City Council has voted to renew the city’s two-decades-old moratorium on new and expanding landfills for another two years, according to a report in the Chicago Daily Southtown newspaper. It appears the ban will prevent Houston-based Waste Management from extending the life of its CID Landfill for five years. However, according to media reports, the company has indicated it may fight the moratorium. The firm had offered to develop a 200-acre park on the landfill site if the city allowed it to delay the scheduled 2005 closing of the landfill.
