Casella Waste Systems, Rutland, Vt., has deployed its first hybrid diesel electric collection truck. The company expects the International DuraStar Hybrid truck to reduce fuel consumption by at least 30 percent and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65 percent.

"We have challenged our people to find solutions to operate our business more efficiently while also reducing our environmental impact," said John Casella, chairman and CEO of Casella Waste, in a press release. "Servicing our customers with this hybrid recycling truck is an important step forward in our commitment to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions as part of the EPA Climate Leaders program, reduce our overall consumption of fossil fuels and insulate our business from the volatility of fuel costs."
