Canadian waste volumes in Michigan increase
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality reported in its annual summary that the overall tonnage of Canadian waste shipped to the state increased to 5.7 million tons in 2006 from 5.6 million tons in 2005.
Despite the overall increase, Toronto decreased its waste output by 1.4 percent to 818,500 tons in 2006. The reductions were attributed to increased diversion by residents and the end of bio-solid shipments that began in August.
The report indicates that Canada remains that largest source of waste imports into Michigan and was responsible for 12 million cubic yards of waste, up 2 percent from 2005.
